Funny prius owners

So the other day I was riding my bicycle and was at a stop light next to someone driving their prius. This guy is driving his "save the world car" and smoking at the same time. This made me laugh that this guy is driving a prius and smoking cigarette. Those two actions seem like they contradict each other. However, it got me thinking. If this guy had pulled up next to me and was smoking a joint, the car and his action would be more on the same level. I think there are a lot of people who think they are saving the world buy driving a prius but are unaware of their other actions.

  1. I think the whole "go green" mentality has become more or a fad than anything else. Half the people out there driving these cars, or participating in "green" activities have no idea what that means. The ideas previously associated with the treehuggers have become main stream and are endorsed by celebrities so now its the cool thing to do. That is pretty funny about the guy in the Prius :)

  2. Maybe this guy drives his Prius so he can afford to buy his cigarettes instead of paying for gas.

  3. They're especially unaware of the effects of the open cast nickel mining that goes into making Prius batteries.

  4. It is a pretty funny situation. My thought on this was that maybe the guy didn't choose the car for its "go green" campaign. I mean, sometimes your parents buy you a car, or you just need what you can afford (I have no idea how expensive Prius's are). Just because someone has something doesn't mean they are necessarily trying to make the statement that we are told it makes by marketers.

What you said about people not being aware of their actions is also intriguing. In my consumerism class, we recently talked about how things like the breast cancer "pink ribbon" campaign allows consumers to feel like we are making a difference (supporting the cause), when in reality, the companies only donate a very small percentage of the profit they make from our purchase. Perhaps driving the prius is his "good deed" for the day that makes him feel like he is making a difference. The likelihood is that very few people out there are going to completely revolutionize their lifestyle for a cause. We all just do something to help, but keep it at the bare minimum so it doesn't interrupt our lives.
